Westminster Abbey has one of the most famous choirs in the world
For over a thousand years music has accompanied the services held in this magnificent building. It is a tradition we are proud to inherit and maintain and Westminster Abbey Choir is now one of the most famous choral foundations in the world. Today it is made up of twenty four choristers and twelve adult professional singers, called lay vicars. The choir is trained and directed by James O’Donnell, Organist and Master of the Choristers, and he stands in a long line of distinguished predecessors such as Orlando Gibbons, John Blow and Henry Purcell.
The choristers sing a vast repertoire of music spanning some five hundred years from all parts of the western world. Besides singing for services in Westminster Abbey the choir is much in demand for concerts, recordings and radio and TV broadcasts, all of which the boys learn to take in their stride.
